Three hours to the Baltic to keep Raymond company at the naval radio operators' meeting — chalk cliffs, deer, and a return flight without the snacks.
This one started as Raymond’s trip. He sits on the council of elders of the MF-Runde — the association of still-transmitting former naval radio operators — and their extended board meeting was being held in Putbus on Rügen, so we flew him up and kept him company: Raymond in the right seat, Gisela and Emiliana in the back. Rügen has its own airfield, but we landed across the water in Barth instead — for its long asphalt runway, and because a car-sharing car via App2Drive was waiting there to take us over the bridge.
While the naval radio operators talked shop, the rest of us did the island. The fallow deer in the park at Putbus, the Königsstuhl standing white above the Baltic with the beeches just starting to turn, and the lighthouses at Kap Arkona, where the swing in the playground turned out to be the real attraction. Emiliana was a model passenger and a model tourist throughout — and stayed remarkably good-humoured on the way home too, given that her father had managed to leave the in-flight snacks behind.
